Prisons to Start Charging for Education

By Rennett Stowe, via Wikimedia

To help offset the costs of locking up convicted felons in the over-stressed prison system, several states will soon be rolling out unorthodox education programs at select prisons that will act as test sites.

Most people that go to prison evidently end up learning how to become better criminals, through the vast knowledge base offered by the captive population. The prison system is working on monetizing on this inevitable consequence of incarceration. Non-convicted individuals will be able to attend lectures and workshops at the prison and pay tuition fees based on how many classes they take. Those already in the prison will not be able to attend these without applying for grants and loans through a special financial aid program.

A few of the tentative majors considered for the program are Controlled Substance Engineering, General Smuggling Studies, Organized Crime Administration, and Political Science.
